 Modest Fashion

The term Modest Fashion was coined by George Taylor in 1926. It is clothing that does not emphasize the figure, with the bottom edge of the skirt or dress reaching below the knee. The term usually moves in the company of the religion of Islam.

Until recently, the trend was mainly associated with Muslim women, who largely sought out outfits that were elegant but not defiant. However, as market experts point out, modest fashion should not only be associated with followers of Islam. According to them, modest means a more mature approach to clothing. The idea is to look striking, interesting, but not defiant.

When thinking modest, a certain set of pictures comes to your mind: hijab in Islam, wigs, and dresses in Orthodox Jews, conservativeness in Christians.

However, I am inclined to argue that modest fashion is also something beyond these patterns. Women are redefining themselves, they know they don't have to reveal themselves, and if they do, it's because they want to, not to arouse desire, win a husband, or shock their family.

An important role is now played by building awareness both in the sphere of women's rights, responsible fashion, and consumption, threats to the environment.  All this, despite appearances, can be manifested in the form of modest fashion. Because it is actually a lifestyle choice.

With more and more modest designs appearing, the number of people who like this style has increased. Non-Muslim women also find themselves in it. The aesthetics of modest fashion appealed to many European women who want to look interesting and stylish but do not want to blindly chase trends that pass every six months.

Modest fashion is becoming more inclusive. It's no longer seen as ‎a trend that older people wear.

Fashion influencers on Instagram have made it look more wearable and accessible for ‎everyone. ‎You see people that practice modesty every single day but you don't see that represented in the media. I hope for it to change with time.

If we go back to Britain in about the 1950s ‎modest fashion was the norm. Everyone had longer hemlines and long sleeves.

While the decision to wear this type of clothing can be due to religious or cultural reasons, it can also be worn to attain a more modest aesthetic. What makes clothing modest is subtle. The differences are usually higher necklines, longer sleeves, and looser fits made from opaque fabrics and textiles. Modest fashion for women is dressing: long sleeve maxidress, black trousers women, maxi skirt, headscarves. Designer labels like Gucci, Balenciaga, and Chloe also seem to be attracted to that modest look and are showcased in a lot of their collections with tunics, dresses modestly, and big coats.

In fact, modest fashion is not a burkini or men's cut suits. It's a conscious voice saying quietly but firmly: "I am not an object."

Modest fashion is an approach to style and building your closet, an approach to your religion. The unforced and uninhibited wearing of things that are simple, useful, unobtrusive, far from flashy.

But also unconventional, complicated, colorful. More covering than uncovering. Not because it is necessary, but because it is possible because you can and want to.
